Cultivate the Connection, The Alignment Between Accommodations & Employability: Arizona Highlights CTE and ESS connections for Improved Post-Secondary Outcomes The newly signed law, Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act, Perkins V, calls for an increased effort to close the performance gap with special populations. Using ideas that were once done in a silo, Arizona is now reaching out to its stakeholders and coming up with innovate ways to include all Arizona students in CTE by increasing awareness of how accommodations in IEP’s today affect employability for tomorrow.
Arizona will highlight the Statewide CTE Strategic Planning process which has included stakeholder and special education input. The statewide Technical Skills Assessment, it’s data and new universal accommodation guidance written in collaboration with Special Education input. The formation of high-skill and in-demand occupational programs which gives more options for all students to concentrate in a specific CTE area. Lastly, collaborative efforts between CTE and ESS included State Conference presentations and PD options for CTE and Special Education directors and their teachers to learn about each other, and how we each participate in the transition planning process to increase engagement in post-school outcomes.

Culturally Responsive Practices for Youth and Young Adults with and At Risk for Disabilities Culturally responsive practices is of paramount importance given the marked demographics shifts in the U.S. population. In order to continue to meet the evolving needs of all students and clients- especially culturally and linguistically diverse youth and young adults with and at risk for disabilities; a greater understanding of equity and inclusion in education is warranted. This session is designed to center the importance of culture in the application of pedagogical and behavioral interventions. We intend to demonstrate how culturally responsive practices can be used to build positive-student teacher and VR counselor relationships; enhance teacher/counselor-parent collaboration and communication, and foster an inclusive and caring learning environment with high expectations with the goal of positively improving educational and employment outcomes.
Presenters:
Dr. Bettie Ray Butler & Doctoral Fellow Sonja Gadd both from the
Urban Education Collaborative & NTACT at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte
